Hi,
I'm the Engineering member for my syndicate RF4D G-BHJN, just done another 50hour and noted some oil strainer nuts I don't like the look of. I'd like to get hold of replacements if possible. Any recommended UK parts suppliers, and what kind are they? The current ones are nyloc but not sure they should be.
I'd also like a workshop manual for the engine - I assume a VW one would be what I need, but which VW model is it derived from?

Thanks for the reply - I saw the manual on this site and I think it's useful for the specifications and basic schedule but when you start looking at the engine in detail I think it's a little light. I do know it's based on the VW lump, but which one?

There is no specific manual for Rectimo 4AR1200 engine. Finnish CAA has approved the use of standard Volkswagen Maintenance Instructions Manual (1969) on Aug 18th 1971. I have the manual, but as it is a Finnish translation, I believe there is not much use of it for your needs.
The basic engine is anyway VW 1/1200. Fournier RF4D Flight Manual gives the differences (clearances, torques etc.) compared to engine maintenance manual. The main problem is magneto end of the engine, because there seems not to be any instructions concerning it.

Here is the part number for M6 cap nut for the sump plate N 011 062 4

Yeah, that manual of course does exist, but it's hardly an overhaul manual. A good source of information, anyway. Please note, that there's an error due to not revising the manual. It says that engine TBO is 850 h instead of 1350 h which it has been for ages.

I bought this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0895862255 and found it very satisfactory. A great deal of useful, practical information on the early engines.

Just for information, the TBO of Rectimo 4AR1200, as stated by rectimo Aviation is 1000hr up to SN 99 then 1500 hr.
At overhaul time SN before 99 can be modified with camshaft bearings and TBO will be 1500.
For the manual you can use the 1600 manual, clearances are the same. The only difference between 1200 and 1600 are: stroker crankshaft, lightly smaller rods, bigger piston pins, bigger cylinders and pistons and different heads. Torque values, clearances bearings etc are all the same.

I am now collecting a complete literature about VW engines in pdf format, plus I already have lots of Airplane/Gliders/Motorgliders literature, everything in pdf. Most of them cannot be displayed on the web due to copyright. Since we are under agreement as CAMO we must have all that documentation updated and as exhaustive as possible. I will consider the possibility to trade in documentation for my archive, or sell CD's with parts of it (sell means share the costs of CD, masterizing and shipping). Hello!
After accidentally deleting my cookies, I couldn't find my password and nothing worked. The forum did not mail it back, so Collin made me a new username - which in a matter of fact is a lot better than the old one! So, I'm back and have finally been able to fly some hours in our 371. One of the cylinders is leaking, though, and it doesn't give all the power (even out of all the 30 something...). So, climbing is quite slow, but it flies nicely after all. I had some problems with the carburettor too, but after three overhauls and some new parts, it works fine now.
But yes, thanks al lot, Eugenio, for your support. Got the mail and have set my maintenance program to local CAA. We'll see what happens after September...
