Hi All,

I have lost my key for the ignition – stupidly enough I had not made a copy of it.

Any suggestions for a suitable replacement for the key lock? Many thanks in advance.

Tim

Ooops,

I just realised that my ignition lock is most likely non-standard, judging from the flight manual and all the different panel pictures I can find.

Never mind guys, I might just revert to a simple toggle switch like most other RF4's.

You might be able to remove it fairly easily & take it to a locksmith and have a new key (& copies!) made.

When I found a new canopy lock that did not have a key, a local locksmith made one for a reasonable price.

You can also buy a scooter key switch that works closing the contacts while you shut off the engine and remove the key.
Probably is cheaper. (12 euros at the motorcycle store with 2 keys) I think that the key switch is safer, because you are sure that if the key is not in the switch the mag is grounded.

Hi Tim,

In the meanwhile, to fly, simply remove the wires from the switch and tape them insulated. Then your magento will be live all the time.
You can always stop the engine as you would in flight to glide, by turning off the fuel.

Many folk are unaware that one of the checks after engine failure should be to put your hand up under the panel and yank the wires out of that ignition switch, just in case it has short-circuited and grounded (earthed) your ignition.

Yours, Bob

Thanks Guys,

I have a locksmith trying to make a replacement key as we speak, before I can go flying I have to install the new engine mounts anyways.

If unsuccessful, I’ll go for a simple toggle switch or the scooter (Vespa?) ignition lock.

Happy Flying.

Tim
