Hi,

I am hoping to buy myself an RF-4 within the next couple of years. My goal is to learn aerobatics properly and perhaps even enter a comp at some point. The RF-4 looks like a great airplane for getting airborne otften, which is what I want.

So to my questions: What is the available payload in the aerobatic category for the RF-4?
I am 188cm and will weigh close to 90kg with clothes and parachute. Can I fly aerobatics in a 4?

Thanks!

Cheers
Marten, Sweden

Hi Marten,

Obviously it depends on the actual weight of the particular RF4D you are interested in, but I was well within the aerobatic weight in both of my Fourniers when I weighed 85kg unclothed.

I am 184 cm high, and I fit in nicely, although I have moved the rudder pedals forwards by 5 cm and made my seats more reclined. Again that is with the standard canopy. Some RF4Ds have a lower canopy from a Ka13, so there is less headroom, so again it depends on the actual RF4D you want to fly.

I suggest you ask the owner of the next RF4D that you see.

Good luck, Bob

Thanks, Bob!

Sounds like I can continue to dream about owning one!

There is one up for sale at afors.com right now and it looks very nice. It has an empty mass of 659lbs, max mass in the normal category is 860 lbs and the max aerobatic is 814 lbs. That means there is only room for 201 lbs (91 kg) normally and 155 (70 kg) lbs if you want to fly aerobatics. You are going to need a few kg of fuel as well so I could definitely not fly this aircraft and I don't know any men who could fly aerobatics in it either!

Btw, I really enjoy your articles, Bob! They are very inspirational.

Cheers
Marten
