N1700F came with the aerobatic cap and I'm okay with tallying fuel burn, but there could be times when a visual fuel indication would be desirable, like on a xc trip.

So, just wondering, is there any known source for the stock fuel cap anymore? Has anyone fabricated one? I saw that Ray was working on an aerobatic model with indicator.

Hi Don,
I bought an aerobatic fuel cap from E.I.S. aircraft in Germany some 5 years ago, but I'm not sure if they sell the stock fuel cap or even if they are still in business. The stock fuel cap is almost a copy (exept the thread) of what is used on Piper Cubs and numerous other aircraft ("float and wire"-type) and for someone who is handy with a lathe it shouldn't be too hard to make one.

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen

Interestingly the cap I have is plastic and for some reason it is has become increasingly impossible to remove without pliers.

I may be finishing up my own design this year (Another partially finished project of mine....geez) but like Jorgen said, an experienced lathe operator should be able to make one out of Aluminum or Nylon etc fairly easy. It took me two tries to get the threads right, but I'm not very experienced with my little lathe.

The float part is dead easy since its just a wire with a float on the end.

You do have to get a forward facing hole on the float guide tube since it keeps positive pressure in the wire area reducing any possibility of airflow induced fuel siphoning. (ie Blow over the end of a straw in a drink and you will see how siphoning works)

Perhaps you can simply retrofit a removable float onto your aerobatic cap and use a plug/cap to seal the hole when using it in aerobatic mode.

Hi Guys,

We only fly with our aerobatic fuel caps, but we have dipsticks and dip the fuel after every landing to monitor consumption. In-flight we use elapsed time and the known consumption of a particular rpm setting/throttle position.

Dipsticks work well with that round-bottomed tank, provided you dangle the dipstick vertically from your fingers into the fuel.

Any slim bit of dowel about eighteen inches ling will do.

Thanks guys,

Never having seen the standard fuel cap, my guess is that the aerobatic cap was just a conversion of that cap. So as Ray said, I could probably modify the aerobatic cap to take a float. But for now I'm doing as Bob describes, aerobatic cap and calibrated dipstick.

If there were enough interest it might be possible to have a shop fabricate a run of fuel cap blanks that could then be finished up by the owner as either aerobatic or standard.
