Hi Fellow Fournier Pilots,

I thought it might be interesting to see where we all fly from; so to start the ball rolling, here are a few photos of Serpentine, Western Australia (YSEN), my base from October to May and home of VH-HDO (plus 130 other, mostly homebuilt, aeroplanes).

We have four runways now, 05/23, which is bitumen and 900 metres long, plus the parallel 05/23 grass at 535 metres long. Then there is the grass 09/27 which is 700 metres long, and a bitumen taxiway which can be used as an emergency landing runway, aligned approximately 15/33, that's narrow and just 450 metres long

From May to October, I mostly fly G-AWGN from an airstrip my wife and I carved out of a Sussex farmer's field.

It is 360 metres long, and slopes downwards towards the north-east (03) so that's the way we usually take off, (top right to bottom left in this photo) landing to the south-west, uphill, in the other direction. That also keeps the taxying short. I have to admit this strip is a bit tight for a Fournier, especially when there's a crop in the surrounding field. This year it was rape (canola) and four feet or more high. The mown strip is only a little over forty feet wide, so I had to mow a central line for my mainwheel, partly to help stay in the middle, and partly to cut down the drag, by keeping the grass under the wheel short.

If you want a laugh, you can see some of my arrivals and departures on YouTube.
Here are some of them:

http://youtu.be/PaZ4f4bM0Yg

http://youtu.be/kXoUpaoQ57o

http://youtu.be/VHFZSxG27R4

http://youtu.be/AEOmqOvSg-Q

During the Northern Hemisphere winters, G-AWGN used to live at the Staffordshire Gliding Club, Seighford, near Stafford in the English Midlands.

So there's an excuse for you to grab your cameras, pull out the Fournier, and get some photos, despite the winter weather.

Yours, Bob

Hello,

Good idea Bob. I think we will see some great pictures. I can host pictures for people if needed.

Here is a picture of my home base.

McMinnville Airport, It's about 40 miles SW of Portland and we get a lot of rain!

Wow, we sure have spread all over the globe I'll add a series of my fields.

My beloved home field and cradle of my aviation. Wredeby, Finland, EFWB.

We have 700 meters of nice grass between a lake and a river!

Turning final 07 on G109A OH-659.

We have all the seasons!
Spring

Summer

And winter

But autumn is dull, we'll hop back to Spring again

This is perhaps my oldest aviation photo. I took it in may 1985 at EFWB. I was 13 at the time. Our 370 has its middle season livery

Nowadays I have the problem that it's over an hour's drive to Wredeby. So I use my other home airfield for flying Cessnas, Pipers and such nolifer airplanes. This is the one and only 70-year-old Helsinki-Malmi airport which is one of the most important places of Finnish history of aviation.

And when I go to summer cottage, I no longer use the neighbors grass field after destroying a wing of and RF4D . So I use Punkaharju airfield which is another water-to-water -field with all 500 meters of runway. (Photo by Heimo Paakkinen). I am always a member of the local club that owns the RF5 mentioned in my signature.

Thanks for acting so quickly guys. That's really wonderful.

What a huge variety of airports, airfields and just fields we all use for our Fourniers.

I always called the RF4D versatile, but I had no idea quite HOW very versatile it was.

Let us hope to see many more Fournier bases as the weeks pass.

Wredeby is (has been) the home base for four Fourniers, RF-4D: OH-370, -371, -380 and in the 70:es RF-5 OH-383, let's hope that in near future those three RF-4:s will fly all together.

Hi Guys,

Here's the address of the web page with footage of landing the RF4 at my British farm airstrip:

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=VHFZSxG27R4

Sam,

What's the story with the river at Santa Paula?
Did it wash away any hangars or airplanes?

I have some very happy memories of flying from there. That's where I first flew a Bellanca Champ, which eventually led to us buying one (they're rare, there were only 72 of them ever built).

I used to go there whenever I flew into LA, but that's a long time ago now.

No airplanes were washed away, but all of the tie down spots and some of the runway was! The airport is better then ever now, after it was put back to gether.

if you're ever in Santa Paula again, your welcome to fly our rf4!

Thank you very much Sam, that's extremely generous of you.

Not sure if/when it might happen, but you'll be one of the first to know if I'm coming over that way.

Yours, Bob

Looking back through my log books, I have a nasty suspicion the last time I was in Santa Paula was before you were even born!

Wow, if that don't make me feel old!!!

Yours, Bob

Sam,

I keep trying (unsuccessfully) to remember the name of the Aeronca specialist who was based at Santa Paula for years.

I don't suppose your folks can remember him?

He retired around 1989, just after we bought our Champ, and I got some bits from him, including the transparent roof.

Juyst trying to kick-start an old man's shrivelled memory.

Yes, I am deliberately side-slipping!

Yours, Bob

Hi,
this is were I fly from- a farm strip in the south of Sweden, just at the northwest corner of the ESMS (Malmö/Sturup Airport) controlzone. To the west in the far background of the picture you can make out the city of Malmö and Öresund, the strait between Sweden and Denmark with Copenhagen on the opposite side some 40 km away. Sorry Bob, no fuel when you pass by on your way to Dala-Järna but that can be arranged nearby.

Take 5(b) just 4 fun/ Jörgen

Hi Jorgen,

I would love to drop in and say hello on my way to Dala-Jarna.

I am currenly applying to all the airworthiness authorities for permission to overfly or land in my EASA Permit to Fly production aeroplane.
This could be a long and complicated process.
I will let you know how things go, and I hope to see you in August if it all turns out OK.

Hi Sam,

Yes, Harrison Bemis. That was the guy. I bought lots of stuff from him shortly after buying our Champ (formerly N9173L) from Snohomish, up near Arlington and Everett, in Washington State (Boeing country).

Yup, I did fly from Mike Dewey's place, and I think the first two-seat Pitts I flew was from there. White with complex thin red cheat-lines.
I do know I didn't fly it with your father (sadly) because the guy who checked me out came from Wyoming.
His bumper (fender?) sticker read: MY OTHER CAR'S A HORSE!

I also visited Lancair when they were there and making their first ever kits.

It all seems such a long time ago, now.

I don't suppose that Bellanca Champ still flies from Santa Paula?
I seem to remember that somebody dropped it into the river?
Maybe you told me that?

I wondered if anybody ever re-built it. It was a nice airplane, and the Bellanca Champs were a bit better built (and a lot more modern) than the original Aeronca ones, which is why I wanted one.
That and the fact that a Champ is a much better airplane than a Cub....!

and here's another Fournier base, further north in Sweden, where Jorgen suggested I stop for fuel.

It's Odestugu, a nice, sleepy gliding site, hidden among the forests, with friendly people.

Jorgen was so helpful to me in many ways, including recommending I refuel here.

Now that I am a proper Fournierteer I figured I'd add my own home airport at Lake Elsinore, CA.

2 parallel runways, the left one being used for gliders and the right one for the jump planes of the skydive operation.
Lake Elsinore is beyond the pond in the next photo.

The Lake, with 3,000' high ridge on the left. Great for Ridge soaring. I'm also 4 miles from the airport

At the Glider club with the ridge in the background.

Here is a landing pattern at Elsinore in the RF4D on the Glider runway.

Skydiving operation uses the other runway exclusively

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg7JNWEGUzs

Its a balmy 70 F in Southern CA and a nice day for flying around.

The runway suffered some during the previous couple weeks due to all the rain.

I made good use of the bungee suspension on the RF4D.

Enjoy

Wow, very nicely done video and a nice sound track as well.

What sort of video camera equipment did you use?

I have been thinking of getting one of those Contour HD helmet cams but I dont think it has a remote trigger capability.

Those runway lights and taxi way signs are always a concern.....looks like you just make it over them.

They should have adjustable stalks and lower them to the ground during the snow free part of the year.

Ray

It's a HERO HD camera from goprocamera.com

I saw some video from one of these posted on a sports car site where a guy had stuck it to the outside of his car. I thought the picture was clear, the camera small and the price reasonable. (Of course, the way things go, these will be $50 in a couple of years.)

Hi James,

That's a really lovely piece of cinematography!

Not only does it highlight the beauty and grace of Rene's design, but it takes my heart racing back to the Pacific northwest.
It's one of our favorite parts of the world, particularly since we have good friends in downtown Seattle and at Sequim, not to mention Ron Wanttaja of Fly Baby fame (whom I have never actually met).

Thank you very much for going to all the trouble of taking the film, flying the airplane, editing and posting.

We very much enjoyed it.

We fly beautiful airplanes. I tried to capture a little of how I felt about it. Will try to have another one later this summer after I have time to experiment with more camera angles. Biggest problem, I used some of my favorite music that I listen to when I go flying....what do I do next???

Will figure something out.

Hi Guys,

I have been going through some old files & photos to cheer myself up.

This is how narrow my airstrip used to be.

Now Matthew shares it with me and the others, and after seeing Jorgen's damage, we've widened it by two metres (six feet) each side.

And this is how to squeeze three 38-foot span airplanes into a 40-foot square hangar.

Yours, Bob
