If you feel inclined to tinker with the baffling on your engine, you will find this little CHT device useful:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007S1MDFE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I particularly like that A) It is only $37 and B) It records the maximum and minimum temperatures automatically so you can check these after you land. C) It is available with 12, 14 or 18mm spark plug adapters.

The only drawback is that the leads are only about 75 cm long. Given the recording feature, I didn't find this a problem. It worked very well for me.

Thanks Steve,

What a great little gadget.

With previous CHT plug washers I have found that the plug fits so snugly in its hole that the tang get torn off after one or two removals.

Have you encountered this issue, and do you know whether it is possible to get replacement plug washers for this CHT system?

Hi again Steve,

I noticed that your link is for a 12mm spark plug washer.

I'm not in the hangar right now, but don't we use 14mm plugs in our Fourniers?

I tried changing the numerals and then searching on Amazon for a 14mm one, but that doesn't seem to work.
I'll try again.

Yours, Bob

On the basis that it's the middle size, I've ordered a 14mm one.

Several suppliers won't do overseas orders, but I found one that did.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ya/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_view?ie=UTF8&a=B005K65CAW&ac=bia&ii=0&ir=&iv=0&mid=AMDFVL5TCX8K6&noi=2&of=months-6&oi=1&oid=110-3334051-7472240&t=Trail%20Tech%20Temperature%20Meter%2014mm%20Spark%20Plug%20Sensor

Cost delivered to UK £34-50

Thanks for the tip-off Steve. It should arrive just as I'm re-installing the engine.

Yours, Bob

Ah yes. The VW is 14mm, the LOM in the Bücker is 12mm so I got one gauge and two probes.

Steve, thanks for the tip on the CHT gauge, I'm going to order one to install when I do the condition inspection.

The Amazon reviews say that an extension cable is available from http://www.trailtech.net but I'm not seeing it. But if it's just a 2-wire cable then might as well extend it so the gauge can mount on the panel. Best to monitor a rear cylinder, right?

Don

UPDATE: I found extension cables on eBay, here's a 48" for $11 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Trail-Tech-TTO-Meter-Vapor-Computer-Extension-Temperature-Wire-48-1200mm-NEW-/231523053254?hash=item35e7d96ec6&vxp=mtr
Looks like 12", 24", and 48" are all available.
