Hello,
I would like to try sometime, 4 of the Beetle (Pee shooters) glass filled muffler tips. Has anyone all ready tried these tips?

I've been looking at the Suppertrapp 3" disk system. A simple 2-into-1 collector could be made, integrated into a short 3" diameter baffle/muffler and the disks. There's no reason airplanes should be any noisier than cars.

- and keep it that way! The "peashooters" is a good idea I think and although the RF 4 original stubs look cool, the noise level is so much lower on the RF 5b. That is probably due to the muffler and the fact that the engine is further away from the pilot. Today I really found the RF 5 quiet- but that might have something to do with the fact that I flew for one and a quarter of an hour with engine time 15 minutes...
Let´s keep this thread updated, I think mufflers are a great idea!

Hi Dann,
I can get pictures if you want, but one of the diffencies between the RF 5 and the RF 4 is that there is a lot of space between the engine and the firewall on the RF 5, which apart from starter and alternator have a 4:1 muffler on the back of the engine along the width of the firewall with the exhaust on the right side. A muffler for the RF 4 will have to look different, I think.

You're right. Yours sounds like a very different system. Is this picture a comon system on RF5's? Or is this something else -- like carb heat or cabin heat?

This is the old configuration of the RF5 exhaust system, exactly like the RF4 is. The standard configuration on all European registered RF5 is a 4 in 1 muffler with side exhaust. I will let you have drawings thru Collin.

Are any of these old style RF5 mufflers available? I don't think the 4 in 1 will fit on an RF4, but this old style RF5 muffler would.

Hi Guys,
as usual Eugenio is correct. For clarity, this is the engine installation on a RF 5 b with muffler and side exhaust:
and as you can see, there´s not room for a RF 5 muffler behind the engine installation on RF 4 SE-XST:
You can also see that the outer stubs or exhaust pipes are slotted and mounted with a clamp. The diameter of the outer pipe is 31 mm on SE-XST, I guess a "peashooter" will have to fit over a 28 mm pipe or something similar.
Bob Hoover has this comment on "peashooters" in his excellent VW-blog:
"Wanna go-fast/make-noise? Pull your peashooters and install a zoom-toobe. Most of the restriction in the stock system is in the peashooters, the big canister is just an expansion chamber. Get rid of the peashooters and you'll have about the same reduction in back pressure as you get from installing an 'extractor' on only two of your cylinders... but without upsetting the volumetric balance or causing the heat riser to clot shut."
So maybe "peashooters" would steal some power- not something you want in the RF 4.
By the way- I have two cracks in the stubs on the 4, so I will have to change them or have some welding done. In the "Maintenance"- "exhaust cracks"- thread there are a couple of more pics for more details.

There is a RF4 in Germany with a Sauer 1800 and the muffler similar to the one installed on RF5, but I do not think is the best way to do it because of the too small place in the engine compartment making the installation very tight and hard to be cooled.
