In studying the idea of replacing the Stall/Gear Lights with brighter
sunlight readable LED's I found some handy reference info that others might
want to use as well

If you want to Drive your typical LED's from a 12v source you need to supply a dropping resistor
to reduce the current/voltage to an aceptible level.

The following image contains the info you will need, a resistor in the 425 to 500 Ohm range.

My order of various LED's has arrived from http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fleds.htm

I ordered about 18 LED's to try out for replacing the current Stall and Gear warning lights
that are not bright enough in full daylight to be noticed.

The existing red is not bad but the yellow is useless.

The LED's are an assortment of colors as well as blinking LED's and a
few that cycle through red/yellow/blue instead of blinking.

They also come in various brightnesses and I ordered a few of the brightest LED's
I have ever seen that have a 90 degree viewing angle.

I will be testing them out in daylight and will put the results here along with movie or picture links.

So far I like the blinking lights as they will be impossible to not notice on the panel and they are clear when not lit.

I like the Bright Red Blinker for Stall warning and the white blinker for Gear, or perhaps the color changing red/yellow/Blue that
cycles through the 3 colors in about 1 second.

The Pirana super bright LED's in Yellow and Red are blindingly bright and would be excelent in bright daylight or perhaps as a bulb replacement. Oddly they were the cheapest at $0.25.

I will certainly have more than a few left over as I ordered 3 of everything
so if anyone else would like a couple for your panel, I'll have extras after I'm done
experimenting.

I also picked up some 330 Ohm droping resistors and is all thats required to hook up to a 12v supply.

I think I might go to the next higher resistance however because my voltmeter registers ~14 volts with
the engine running.

Pictorial results to follow in the next couple days.

Here is some more info and video of my LED parts in action.

Next step is the installation, but I'd rather fly than rewire in the cold so it will wait a bit till some warmer weather has arrived.

An 2.25" MGL Engine monitor for EGT, CHT, Oil Pres and Oil Temp is also waiting for warmer days.

Here is the install in progress of LED's to replace the Gear and Stall warning lights and buzzer
which I found not bright enough in the cockpit to really get my attention.

The original Buzzer had also failed so I replaced it with a small but loud 12v peizo buzzer and
added a defeat switch so I can idle/thermal and not have the buzzer screaming the whole time.

I also added a MGL Infinity Engine monitor which will monitor the EGTs & CHTs, plus serve as a backup for RPM
and perhaps backup the Oil Pres & Temp as well.

I have also given some thought to using the Oil Temp input for under cowl temps instead since the MGL allows you
to customize the sensor input and ranges to accomodate preactically any kind of sensor.

Here is the movie of my panel install along with the failed Gear LED test.

More to come when the install is complete and working.

I wonder how I'm going to hide the hole in the pannel above the MGL Monitor where the original stall light resided ?
Ideas?
