I am collecting the gauges for my new panel. I recently got a Falcon dual CHT gauge and discovered the mechanism must have some large magnets in it that play havok with the compass. I can't put it within 5 or 6 inches of the compass without affecting it. I have some basic single ISS gauges that don't seem to cause a problem.
Collin, does your Micro 100 dual CHT guage affect the compass?
Are there specific designs of gauges that are better/worse than others?
I noticed that a number of people mount the compass on top of the panel. Is that to free up space in the panel, or because of the interference?

Hi Dann,
I don't remember if the the CHT/EGT gauge causing any issues. Opening and closing the canopy on my RF4 changes the compass about 30 degrees.
I moved the compass on top for mainly for room.

Cannot speak about the instruments but for sure the canopy frame can become magetised. I used to get about 30 degrees of compass deflection when I closed the lid. I eventually borrowed a degausser from a TV repairman and degaussed the frame and that made a huge difference though I felt a bit like Obi Wan Kenobi as I waved the thing about deep in the back garden.

Collin, nice set of Winter instruments! Did you get the airspeed custom made with range markings and zero at 6 o'clock position? What did it cost?

One way to deal with troublesome stray magnetism is to magnetically shield the offending instrument with mu-metal, a Nickel-Iron alloy developed for this purpose. This is most easily done with self-adhesive mu-metal tape which you can find here:

It has worked for me in the past both for compass problems in aircraft, and hum problems in stereo equipment.
