--- Rebuilding Collin's RF4D N2182 (https://sbeaver.com/cgi-bin/fournier/cutecast.pl?forum=11&thread=1133&page=)

Posted by dannparks on Sunday, January 10, 2016 @ 07:33 PM:

We've started the process of rebuilding Collin's RF4D N2182. The plan is to rebuild it to "showroom stock" condition, with all original components (but with a radio and transponder) and duplicate the original paint scheme. I'll recover it in fabric (like mine), and Collin will have the painting done and do all the mechanical and engine work.

We'll post our progress - although it's probably a 2-year project. The woodwork looks to be in perfect condition, and it should be a beautiful addition to the Fournier fleet when completed.

Yes, I like the "all original" idea too. Although mine looks original, there's very little original about it. I look forward to helping Collin create a true antique aircraft.

Now that it's warmed up a bit in the hangar, I've started the stripping process. A heat gun and putty knife makes short work of it. Hopefully we can bring the wing up next weekend. Still a long-term project, but I would like to get the fuselage back to Collin quickly so he can paint it and do all the engine work.

Managed to coordinate people and trailer to pick up Collin's wing in McMinnville today. Thanks to neighbors Peter and Brian -- and Collin flew into Parkside to help unload and check on progress. These one-piece wings are a pain to move around on the ground - they go nicely through the air, though.

Thanks for the update Dann,
looking forward to more progress reports. I concur what you say about the one-piece wings of Fourniers, they might be awkward on the ground but move gracefully through the air. A bit like an albatross :D

Nice work Collin and Dann, looks marvelous! Please post the subsequent painting, I'm interested in especially that mesmerizing wingprofile pattern on the fuselage in front of the wingroot. Keep that good work up!

Have the interior painted. I went with white upper and gray lower. I had looked at a lot of RF4 interior pictures. Looks like from the factory there were some painted all grey some white.

Hey Collin. Looks great. You got the numbers perfect. Bet you're looking forward to getting the engine hung and doing all the fun stuff. It's been slow progress on getting the rest of it stripped, but you've got plenty to keep you busy for a while :^).

Hi,

Yes I am happy with the "N" numbers too. Today I am detailing the tail wheel assembly, then I will bolt on and bring the RF4 to my shop where it is heated!

I will be starting on the engine very soon. The low time engine I will be using is from Mira's RF4. The one he did the first Atlantic crossing in '68. Mira's serial # is 4064 and mine is 4065.

Gorgeous job Collin,
sounds way cool to use Mira's engine. Are you going with the 1400 and was that on originally?

Well, after seemingly F-O-R-E-V-E-R, I was finally able to get all the old fabric off and finish the covering of Collin's empennage parts.

The covering only took a couple weeks. Removing the old fabric took a year - a royal pain. Delivered the parts to him yesterday. Got to see his fuselage paint job in person and it looks fabulous. It will be a beautiful example when finished. Now, on to the wing!!!

And thanks to Steve for the new photo posting system. Works great!

Very nice work Dann,

It's interesting to know that I'm not the only one who had huge difficulty getting off the old cotton fabric.

I had the same trouble when I re-covered HDO's fuselage.

It seems to have rotted after all these years, and would only come off with great difficulty, one inch at a time!

Well, I hope everyone is well and getting through this OK. Since I wasn't going anywhere for a while, I figured it was a good time to finally get onto Collin's wing. So I took it down from the hangar ceiling and put it on the jig and started ripping off old fabric. Hopefully if I focus on it I can actually get it done and back to Collin after all there years .

Hopefully we can all be flying again soon.

Great work Dann,

It is so good that you are able to convert adversity to a positive outcome like this.

I find it very frustrating to be stuck 9,000 miles from my own rebuild projects, but it is what it is.

I wish you good luck and all speed with your project Dann, and may all of you Fournier fans stay fit and healthy during these difficult times.

Onwards and upwards, Bob
