Well after all the time, dirty knuckles, head scratching, moving forward, and moving backwards, I cranked over the engine on Monday and it started right up!

I had decided to start the engine before making the baffles in case I needed to remove and disassemble it for some reason. Bob Brock had been over on Sunday and we confirmed oil pressure. I tested fuel flow (gravity) and got 30 GPH flow right down to an empty tank. So there was no reason to wait around.

It started right up as soon as fuel was turned on. Good oil pressure. It's only run for a minute or so, but the AeroCarb seemed to be doing its job at low and medium power. Although it vibrates a lot, it idled amazingly well considering how tight the rings still are. And there was no oil gushing out of it (my biggest concern).

I wasn't getting any indications on the EGT, or CHT gauges, so I stopped to check things out. I tested all the sensors with a heat source and the gauges moved, so I guess it simply wasn't run enough to heat anything up. I need to make some wiring changes and then I will run it a bit more to confirm electrical charging is working.

I want to get the fuselage on the wing and landing gear before really running it hard, but now I have some inspiration!

Thanks to all the forum members for all your help to get me to this point.

Congratulations Dann,
another milestone passed! Glad to hear you didn't get any oil leaking on that gorgeous paint job. If you have time I would be interested to see some pictures of how you choose to make your baffles, I'm sure there are some neat solutions that could be shared. Since you have to remove the baffles when doing annuals it might pay to put a bit of thought into making the baffles easy to remove. On XST I've noticed that I tend to curse a lot when working in the port rear baffle corner...

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen

On second thought-
isn't this the first Diehl-equipped Fournier to crank up? If so, congratulations again to an RF 4 + starter without the ugly "büömp" on the top cowling.

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen

Continued engine testing...

It seemed to idle fine, but would not rev up much more than 2400 RPM and it would run rough. I thought it was over-rich, but after playing with the air/fuel ratio in the slide-pin it turned out is was actually too lean. After richening it a bit, it will now take throttle fine and will hold 3000-3100 static RPM using the stock prop. It could probably take a prop with a bit more pitch, but at this point I'm planning to get a new prop just like what Bob Brock is having made. I would prefer having the extra climb performance.

So far the AeroCarb is performing OK. EGT's on each side are dead-even, so my big concerns about the left-right mixture balance seem to be unfounded.

I'm getting a little oil weeping from the oil cooler bracket and a few other places that I'll try to fix.

The mufflers work amazingly well. It sounds like a motorcycle -- actually much quieter than a typical Harley. Heat resistance will be the next test.

Again, thanks to everyone on the forum for help and encouragement.
