Yeah,
I know that feeling, kinda makes work even more of a bummer, right? At least he wasn't soaring...

Good thing the RF5B's belly was clean!
Actually, one of the reasons for the trip was to get a longer session open cockpit to see how it might be for a longer trip. Down & back to McMinnville was 4.5 hours with a 15 minute fuel stop. Worked ok. Did determine that I need to manage wind noise through my headset better. All else pretty good.

Beautiful scenery, and unobstructed photos with the open cockpit,
but its hard to imagine with all that green how it could start burning.

Hmmmm,
the 4's is strong with this one....
I fly with silicone earplugs in addition to headset with ANR which I think makes the noise level OK. I don't have to set the volume of the radio any higher than without plugs.
I also try to avoid washing the belly of the 4- I hate that trickle of cold water down my arm... I tell myself that from below the belly looks black anyway. Collin's picture seems to tell a different story though. Great pics, thanks for sharing!

but Jorgen, it is so easy...
Obviously put an old mattress or rolled carpet under the nose.
Turn the propeller horizontal (but you always do that anyway).
Apply the parking brake and chock the wheel.
Watch that the raised tail does not hit anything.
Attach a rope over the tail a) to slow the tail's rise and the nose's fall after you get half-way and b) so that you can pull it back down again.
...and you will get a small dribble of oil out of the front main bearing's scroll seal -- or you can do this every time you do an oil change, after you've drained the oil, but before you've re-filled it.
No water down your sleeve, and a nice clean belly (on the aeroplane)!
And I too wear ear-plugs in an ANR headset, because that works best for me and I don't want to damage my hearing any more than necessary.
Yours, Bob

So far, I've had the best luck with an in-ear headset, using the cushions from a headset around my ears to reduce wind coming in the front edges of the leather helmet. I just need to reduce the (possibly) drum effect of the leather across the cushion.
I've got a new leather helmet coming that should fit a little better. Am going to try different ways to fill the foam ear cups to see what is most comfortable and provides the best sound deadening. This particular leather helmet has flaps and pockets over the ears and I've filled that space with a dense, foam rubber sheet (pieces from an older mouse pad for the computer). Will just keep experimenting until I find the right combination.
I tried a regular headset, but found too much wind noise being transmitted from the wind hitting the hard shell of the ear cups. I suppose I could make a padded cover for them.
But...could also try ear plugs & turning up the anr headset.

So....I'm not claiming that this is even a convincing Photoshop job....but, the background is essentially a non-enhanced photo taken from the RF5B with an overlay of the glider itself. The closest some of us poor schmucks will get to having a magazine photographer follow us in just the right conditions. Just a nice thought for a screensaver on my computer. (For you realists, yes....there is a glaring absence of tailwheel, outriggers, etc., for artistic value.....but it's merely a screensaver.... )

WOW!
Looks like Luke's father patrolling the iceplanet of Hoth with rebel Tauntauns hidden among the waveclouds.
As for cleaning up the already very nice lines of the RF 5b- wouldn't it be nice if there were a way...

James,
that is indeed a spectacular film. You must have absolutely fantastic soaring possibilities up there, what a good home for a RF 5b!
