Hi Guys,

After long and so far fruitless searches, At last I may have found a guy who might be prepared to translate Rene's excellent book into English.
At 400 pages, this wil be a huge undertaking, and he wants to see the book before deciding, but he's an aviation technical translator and he's already translated the Jodel history book.

Be warned, this will not be a cheap process. He will scan the photos and burn them and the translation on to CDs, each of which is likely to cost around £20 or $30, just to recoup his costs, so this will effectively be a labour of love from a guy who's really a Jodel fan at heart.

He sold around 300 of the Jodel translation CDs, so he is interested to know how many Fournier CDs he might sell.

I would buy three. With no committment at all, could you guys perhaps indicate what numbers you might be interested in buying, so that I can give him some encouraging figures to go ahead and make a start.

I have said that, for us, maybe he need not translate the whole book, just up to page 224, which covers the RF01, RF2, RF3, RF4, RF5, RF5B and RF7. I can't offhand remember whether than covers the SFS21 Milan too.

So... who's interested?

Yours, Bob

Yes, of course Eugenio. Today I mailed him a photo, a DVD of our 2012 flying, money for another copy of his book, and the request to allow an English translation.

I do hope that he agrees because my French is just not good enough to fully understand everything in what is clearly a great book!

Looking forward to meeting you again soon Eugenio, maybe this summer?

Hi Bob

Could you post your proposal on the UK Forum? There ought to be some interest there too. I've been trying to read Mon Reve on and off for some time now but my French is so bad it's a painful process and I'd be interested in a copy.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for all the positive answers.

As with everything in general aviation, this is taking a while.

So far I have neither heard from Rene, nor from the possible translator, and until they have both said 'OK', nothing will happen.

Be assured, as soon as I hear anything, I shall let you all know, and the British forum guys too, of course, Mike.

Okay Guys,

We are making some progress here, but it will take time.

Graham Clark is a professional technical translator. He is a Jodel pilot, and because he has such respect for Joly, Delemontez and René, he has agreed to make this translation from French into English in his spare time.

Because it is such a big book, this will probably take him three or four months, after which he will visit René to confirm details and correct any ambiguities.

Then he will hand over the translation to me for illustration and recording on an appropriate medium. This is likely to be CD, but it could be data DVD, or it might even be possible to put the whole lot on-line somehow, but of course both he and I would like to recoup our costs.

With the small number of sales anticipated, we probably won't do this at anything approaching a sensible price, but right now I think we're looking at something in the area of £15 or $20 or 20 euros or thereabouts. If we asked any more, nobody would buy it!

As I said earlier, it will take Graham some months to make the translation, and it will then take me some more months to obtain and incorporate illustrations. We have agreed between us that, come what may, the translation will be availabe to you before the end of 2013, but realistically, it will probably only be available in time to make a nice Christmas/Hannukah present.

Nothing ever came of Matthew Hill's uncle's 'book' project, so if there is sufficient space I would like to incorporate some of the material here on the topics 'What have you done with 39hp?' and perhaps the accounts of the two big Gap-Tallard meetings as appendices to show that Fourniers are still not only going strong, but thriving.

I will also include the most up-to-date info I can get on the new folding-wing RF4UL with Vanguard engine. It may even have flown by then!

If anybody out there has any original historical photos we can incorporate into this translation, I should be extremely grateful if they would contact me.

Thanks very much.

Yours, Bob

Hi Guys,

An update on Graham's translation...

He has made an intial, raw draft of the first six chapters.

I am currently bedridden, recovering from a right far lateral L2/3 discectomy, so I am very keen to have something to read. Graham has sent me a copy of his draft, on the proviso that nobody else sees it yet.

I Just wanted to let everybody know that the project is under way, but I am still waiting for high-resolution contemporary photos -- or any photos of early Fournier construction -- RF-01, RF-2, RF3, RF4, RF4D, RF5, RF5B, RF6, RF7 etc.... anything.

Ron Smith will let us have copies of his photos elsewhere on this site after his book is published in the autumn/fall, but any other photos from the sixties, seventies and even eighties would be very welcome.

Any helpers out there?

Yours, Bob

Photos of Paint schemes about 15% are Fourniers.

Thanks Ray, That's great.

Guys, Graham has suggested that, as a kind of postscript to his book, we feature good photographs of as many as possible of our Fourniers that are either still flying, or under renovation.

If you would like to post your favourite photos of your aeroplane either here, or in Fourniography, I will download them and incorporate them.

I have now read chapters one to six, and I have to say that René is an excellent writer and that Graham makes an excellent translation. I could not put it down, and I am sure that you will all feel the same way.
We should all be very grateful to Graham that he is making this legendary work available to us English-speakers.

Paul Cooper (Cooperman) will be taking Graham for a flight in the Seighford group's RF5 and we shall invite him to any get-togethers that we can.

Did you all see Guy Westgate's photo of René at the Sanicole get-together last week?
I am delighted to say that he looks as spry as ever, with a great, big smile.

Yours, Bob

Hi Guys,

Here's an update on the translation into English of Rene's book. Graham has now finished up to and including Chapter 19, and the first draft of the full book will be complete within the month of August for checking with Rene.

So from the end of September, it will be up to me how quickly the job is finished.

The scanning of photos will have to wait until I'm back in Australia, and my departure from England wil be delayed by the need to dismantle our hangar and move it to another airstrip, since our farm home for the past 28 years has been sold, I'm told, to an Austrian propery developer and we've been given an eviction notice.

I also have to disassemble my red Fournier before leaving, so that its fuselage can be re-covered and re-painted.

But the Fournier English language fraternity can be optimistic that we'll have that illustrated translation complete in time for Christmas!

Hi Jorgen,

Yes, Tony will be doing the fuselage re-cover, and I hope we shall be going to his airstrip too, although there is a question-mark over that, also it's quite a long way away.

I will try to keep everybody informed, but right now I'm busy making new aileron operating arms and outrigger sockets.

Hi again Guys,

Graham has now finished the initial 'rough' translation -- although it is not actually at all rough.

I have read the first few chapters, and honestly could not put it down!

Now he's mailing it to Rene for checking by him and his son Frederick.

In a few weeks Graham will be meeting with them to discuss an anomalies.

Then I will scan and incorporate photos, maybe add some contemporary magazine articles and an attempted update to the story, burn DVDs and distribute them. I'm still in England, and my scanner etc are all in Australia, so we are still looking at a completion towards the end of the year.

Good morning from Bristol, England. Brief intorduction from me, Graham. I am the chap who was approached by Bob Grimstead to translate René Fournier's book from French to English. A good job I am semi-retired because it took me about 50 unpaid working days. But it was a labour of love, because I have huge admiration for anyone who follows in the footsteps of Henri Mignet ('Pou du Ciel / Flying Flea') with the objective of helping you and me to fly without breaking the bank.
On completion of my draft translation, I visited René and with the help of his son Frederic (who speaks excellent English) we went through all my queries. So the job is as good as I can do it. The text is now with Bob Grimstead who on return home will get on with production.
So, if you have not yet sent Bob your best RF shots, please do so, because that little effort on your part will represent a huge enrichment for this project.
When I met René last month, he was on excellent form. A joy and and an honour to spend a day with him and his family. Worth all the effort.

Hi Guys,

I am really sorry, but there will be an unavoidable and unforeseen delay.

I will say more later, when things have been better resolved, but right now I am looking at weeks of grief and hard work, and this project can only come after my hangar and Fournier are sorted.

The GOOD news is that Ron Smith has just sent me a DVD of excellent hi-res photos taken at the Sportair factory in the sixties and seventies, which I shall incororate into the DVDs.

Please be patient. It is no exaggeration to say that 2013 has been the worst year of my life, and the disasters have clearly not yet stopped coming.

More when I have time.

Hello Fellow Fournier Folks,

As 2013 comes to an end (none too soon for me) I want to give you an update on the English translation of Rene Fournier's book.

Graham has completed his translation (months ago) and made an excellent job of it.
I thought that my role would simply be one of proof-reading, re-formatting, scanning photos and putting the whole lot on to DVDs.

However, I have just received a lovely letter from Rene, via his son Frederic, saying that Frederic and an unamed English-speaking pilot friend who lives nearby (presumably Brian Morgan) want to go through the translation again.

I am not sure how long that will take, and I myself am totally preoccupied with re-erecting my hangar and working on my British RF4, so it will be a while (probably several months) before I can continue with this project.

Please be assured that when I am done with these two major, unexpected projects, I shall rush back to Australia to complete this vital job. It's just that fate seems to have conspired against me this year, and delayed everything unnecessarily.

I wish you all a very happy New Year, with great weather, excellent serviceability and lots of memorable Fournier flying.

Yours, Bob

Bob,
some say everything happens for a reason. Might this dealy give me some time to leaf through my photos and see if there might be something of interest for you to incorporate in the book? Whish you a Happy New Year and a swift return to Australia for some re loading of batteries.

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen
