Good morning fellow Fournier’s,
I spent the weekend partly dismantling the prospective engine which will be rebuilt and used in my PIK 21 Sytky I am building. Attached are some pictures of it being stripped down to its bare bones. I will be using stock VW 1600 jugs and heads (maybe drill and blank for dual ignition), the con rods, all the bearings (mains and rods and cam) will be replaced along with the oil pump and depending on the condition the camshaft and lifters as well. A brief visual inspection of the rockers (tappets) showed some wear so they will be overhauled/replaced as needed. The compression ratio will be 8.0 : 1, meaning I will be litering the heads and adjusting the deck height accordingly, along with some blueprinting and small simple mods to keep the reliability in check.
Also spent some time setting up the table saw and planer ready for the onslaught of wood to be cut and planed over the xmas break including manufacturing a strip guide for the planer to enable me to plane the 15 x 15 and 12 x 12 lengths of spruce needed for the fuselage and formers. The ribs are mainly 5 x 6 mm cap strips so they plane down nicely with accuracy to 0.3 mm (3 tenths) which I think can be accepted. I will not be using sitka spruce but instead I have some 3 x 20 x 300 cm planks of Mountain Spruce (Bergfichte) as used by instrument makers, which I was able to get for a silly price from a local mountain saw mill and lumber yard. Pictures to follow from the planer and its results a the Weekend.
Roger
