Save the date for the 2012 Touring Motor Glider Fly-In: Thursday July 12th – Sunday 15th, Minden, Nevada.
The 2011 TMG Fly-In was a roaring success. Twenty four (24) ships graced the flight line, including: Grob, Taifun, Ximango, Stemme, Lambada, Samba, Phoenix, Diamond, Pipistral, and Fournier (Collin). Aircraft came from California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Between pilots, friends, and prospective buyers, 40 people participated in the flying, presentations, and meals. We believe it is the largest gathering of TMG's in the country. Five ships went on to Parowan, Utah to link up with the Auxiliary-powered Sailplane Association's annual soaring event.
I think this might be the venue for us to combine for our first ever US Fournier Fly-in.
I think we can get a number of Fourniers to attend this year as they will be finished and have a few miles under their wings by then.
This site has good amenities with a couple glider operations for those that just want to show up and rent a plane or take a ride.
It is also close to Reno and Lake Tahoe so might also make for a good vacation location for those wanting to spend a bit more vacation time.
I am thinking at least 4 Fourniers could attend:
Ray - RF4D
Collin - RF5B
Dan - RF4D
Bob - RF4D
We might be able to convince a few more to come out and have a significant showing of Fourniers.
Also linking up and flying together with others is always reassuring and with the other Fly-in ships coming from all parts of the US there could be some added safety in numbers.
As a matter of fact there could be an entire squadron from Washington and Oregon alone if they all decided to come.
The overnight facilities near the airport include various options such as camping/RV parks, reasonable hotels and motels etc.
Most of us shared rides to the local hotels a few miles away on previous trips
Anyone interested in attending and making a Fournier event out of it as well?.
The TMG organizers are very receptive to it as well.
The Minden airport administration is also very happy to see us back again in 2012.
Ray

Would you folks all fly down together as a gaggle?
I can see some awesome photo opportunities on that flight of 6 Fourniers
from the Washington and Oregon down to Minden.

Hi,
If the guys with the RF4s want to throttle back to fly with the slower RF5Bs and make a extra fuel stop.
It would be fun.

Greetings:
All it takes is a great event to get us all together.... and I understand last year was wonderful. I am sure we can talk Ron May and the Bricky's into coming down in their Lambadas. I plan to fly down in N7725... it will be FUN! Not only will we have three 4's, and a few 5's, but lots of other motor gliders. I can not wait to see the ships and hear the stories about the rebuilds. Bob

I would be game for it.
Had planned to go this year but encountered a conflict with a project at work. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon for me.

Just another heads up on the Fly-in.
We decided to form a "Touring Motor glider Association" affiliated and as a division with the Soaring Society of America (SSA) and mailed all 640 Touring type motorglider owners in the USA an invitation to the TMG association and the Fly-in.
This years fly-in might end up being the biggest Touring Motor glider fly-in ever in the US so it would be a great year to come as we are expecting folks from every part of the US in all sorts of motor gliders.
Its a good thing Minden, NV is a huge airport with hundreds of tie downs, and the local businesses and hotels have extended their warmest greetings and look forward to our arrival.
Check out the TMG site and the Maps of TMG concentrations. I also built a Fourniers only Map in the Fournier forum.

Just a reminder that I you are thinking of coming to the Minden fly-in this year
http://www.touringmotorgliders.org/events/flyin2012.php
you should take a moment to fill in the sign up sheet as it lets us know how many
we need to make room for on the flight line, restaurant etc.
http://www.touringmotorgliders.org/events/flyinroster2012.php
Also you can see who else is planning to go and perhaps get some gaggles to fly out together as its more fun that way and there is safety in numbers in case something unexpected happens over the Atlantic or some other inhospitable place.
Also you can see who is in your area(Zoom in) on the big map and bug them to come too.

I've booked the room at Wally's resort, do we think Dan and Bob are going to make it as well?
How about the WA contingent of RF5B's?
Not sure who else is planning, perhaps Don (Sam RF4D) will next year since he still has to work on his Glider add-on and
I have not heard if Mira wants to fly his RF4D this year.
I think he had a Biplane to fly/deliver so perhaps he will drop in on us in the Biplane.
In any case its going to be good fun and looking forward to it.
I'm putting a pop open scoop/vent in the RF4D so I can get some more air on me while flying to stay cool.
Also installing a Pee tube so lookout below.

Off topic, but I have bad experience with a pee tube on our LS 3 glider. Maybe you have more experience in installing them, but we found smearing of the whole underside wich wasn't always apparent (or washed away). That actually caused some corrosion on the rudder fittings even though they were hidden in the tail.

I rigged a "pee valve" on a scuba diving dry suit, but it vents to the ocean. I have to agree with Jörgen about not venting it into the air. An internal container should be pretty easy to rig and cleaner too. I have a list of the items required (mainly non-kink Norprene tubing and quick-disconnect fittings) all available for $25 from McMaster. PM me if you want further details.

For those coming to the Minden Flyin this year I noticed that you have not signed up yet.
Do it here ASAP as estimated numbers are necessary for our all volunteer group to coordinate
things like food, transportation, seating etc.
Use this link.
http://www.touringmotorgliders.org/events/flyinroster2012.php
Colin and Dan, I did not see you guys on the list, where you going to make it this year?
Also, if you need to book a room use the info here to get a room at "Wally's" before they run out.
David Walleys Resort (Mention the "Touring Motorglider" discounted rate)
2001 Foothill Road
Genoa, NV 89411
(775) 782-8155
http://www.davidwalleys-resort.com/
Most of the facilities in the Minden area are getting full so if you don't do it now you might miss out and have to use the hanger couch
or find a room with a couch to share with someone else.

Just another heads up that Mira Slovak will be attending the Fly-in and giving a talk on his adventures.
Although not flying in with his RF4D, he is bringing a Bucker Biplane.
For those lurkers who don't know, he flew across the Atlantic a couple times in an RF4D and has generally had a very eventful
and interesting life, friend of the Boeing (aircraft) family, racing hydroplanes, racing aircraft, daring escapes from communist countries etc. His talk would be worth a day trip to the Fly-in even if you don't have a plane.

The fly in is next week Thursday to Sunday and I was wondering how many Fournier folks are planning to visit.
Bob B and I both have reservations at Wally's resort, but I wonder who else is coming?

After all that prep my trip to Minden this year has been canceled.
I'm home with a mild case of food poisoning of all things and am far too queasy to go flying.
To make matters worse I had replaced an out rigger I busted last weekend when I caught it on some sand while landing.
I replaced it makeshift quickly for the trip with some white plastic plumbing tubing I had on hand and while I was sitting on the wing next to the cockpit, it deformed/bent and did not spring back...sigh!
I guess a higher power does not want me to go...next year then!
Like Jorgen says I hope someone video's Mira's talk.

Sorry to hear that Ray,
I know how you must feel. When Bob (Grimstead) flew from the UK to "flygfesten 2009" in Sweden I really wanted to join him but was grounded due to a cracked exhaust....
You will get to Minden next year, don't worry. You get well now and from your stories about various critters I think you should make sure it is food poisoning from some microbe and not venom from a significantly larger organism...

I was tentatively planning to go as well but it didn't work out. Came back from a dive vacation two weeks ago with a middle ear barotrauma and I'm still grounded until it resolves. I did get as far as loading Ray's route into XCSoar and mounting the gps in the Fournier.
Especially sorry to miss meeting Mira, but as suggested, maybe someone will video his talk.
I'll try to be better prepared and organized for next year. So far all my flight's have been local, so need to make some longer trips before then.

The weather today, the day I was to leave for Minden is dreadfull.
The Ceiling is 1000' and visibility less than a couple miles.
Seems like we are getting some monsoonal flow from the Semi Hurricane that was offshore on the Mexican pacific west coast.
I don't feel so bad as I would not have been able to fly this morning as planned.
I use this to see whats coming my way....looks like poor or worse conditions...glad Im not flying today.

The Touring Motor Glider Association's annual Fly-In, Minden, NV airport, July 25 - 28, is now only 2.5 months away. This has been a great event in the past. If you want to attend and are a TMGA member, you should go to the TMGA website (www.touringmotorgliders.org), and sign up in the Events tab, 2013 TMGA fly-in section. The organizers need head counts for the various activities, e.g. fly-outs, dinners, etc. Information about the hotels is on the web site. If you're not a member, you can sign up via the above listed web site. There's no cost to join the TMGA.
