There is a series on Netflix at the moment called "Plane Resurrection". http://usa.newonnetflix.info/info/80133317/s

In the third episode, a German surgeon resident in the UK builds a Fokker DR1 from Redfern plans, and demonstrates covering it with Oratex fabric. He provides a lot of details of the process as he applies the covering, does the rib lacing and applies the finishing tapes.

Good stuff.

Thanks Steve,

Unfortunately we don't do Netflix, but that would be useful to see.

Luckily, our Fourniers don't need rib-stitching or tapes, which saves a huge amount of time and results in a better finish.

Thanks for the tip Steve, I'll check that out.

Well Bob, our Fourniers don't need rib stitching or tapes you say but I wonder. I certainly agree that most motor gliders or gliders don't do that (weight saving?), but just today I was contemplating some paintcracks that would perhaps not have happened with tapes. Or perhaps not if dope would've been used to anchor the paint better?

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen

We became "cable cutters" almost a year ago, ditching overpriced and almost unwatchable cable TV for good. One of the fun things about Netflix (and similar services) is being able to watch programs from all around the world. We have been enjoying several Danish series, and Icelandic series and now a crime series from Sweden. All with subtitles of course. So much better quality than anything the US networks produce and fun to learn a few words of other languages .

Hi Guys,

Thanks Steve, I may have to investigate Nextflix because free-to-air TV is also mostly rubbish in both Britain and Australia these days (although we did enjoy Anthony Hopkins inFracture last night.
Unfortunately much the same can be said of the majority of Hollywood movies (Sully excepted, of course).
I hadn't even considered foreign films, but that sounds like a great idea!

Jorgen, I would venture to suggest that your paint cracking issue is one of insufficient plasticity in the paint. The paint/fabric combo will still flex, and the paint will still crack, even if stitched, surely? The things about rib-stitching (and knotting) are that they are incredibly time-consuming, plus they ruin the aerodynamics along and around every rib. Plus the cost and weight, of course. The RF3 & 4's wings were specifically designed with wide, bevelled ribs to make stitching unneccessary, so that is the way to go, I reckon!

Yours, Bob
