Hi Fournieteers,
just got an E-mail from my fellow swedish friend Roland, who flew Fourniers in the eighties and ever since haven't been content without one. He leaves for the UK next week to get a new C/A and fly his new RF 4 to Sweden. He claims he read my travel account several times and seems much more prepared (and with more advanced electronics) than I was eight years ago. He will probably start from Bicester (north of Oxford) just like I did. I will try to get updates for you and Roland says he thoroughly agrees about Fourniaviating beeing a chronic condition!

I can only concur. Luckily I got an hour fix (engine time 10 minutes) four days ago, so I'm good. Four now, that is..

May the 4s be with you/ Jörgen

Hi Fournieteers,
just got an update from my Swedish friend Roland, who has been to the UK, flown his RF 4, done the annual at Bicester and changed to ASI in km/h and Altimeter in meters (apparently as originally delivered?). The weather has been unusually soggy in the UK I'm told, so Roland has postponed his ferry flight to beginning of June. I'll try to keep you guys posted.

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen

Hi Guys,

The weather is still completely un-flyable in England (particularly if you fly off a grass strip as we do).

We flew 48 practice sessions this time last year. In 2012 we have only been able to fly two!

So I don't reckon this RF4D will leave Britain for a while.

Which one is it Jorgen? G-PPLO?

Yours, Bob

Hi again,
just got words from Roland who had to postpone the ferryflight even further, actually for not-weather related causes. And yes Bob, it is G-PPLO. I'll try to keep you Guys posted.

Hi,

Is there any news concerning this matter? Waiting for our Scandinavian fleet to get bigger!

Heiii Antti-
you're alive!!! Thanks for the concern, Roland has been seriously delayed partly due to wx (I think Bob and the other UK Fournieteers can vouch for an unusually wet summer) but also because of work issues. Hopefully he will make the ferry end of August.

I might add that the guys at "Flygfabriken"
http://www.flygfabriken.se/
aquired a "Ximango" recently. In my book Ximango's counts as a Fourniers too. I know that Lage Norberg is a die-hard glider pilot and holds Fourniers in high regards so it's not entirely unexpected.

The unstable wx here has it's advantages and I got some good 4 gliding with a gliding landing as late as yeaterday. Antti, please post about your Fournication status. We're getting worried you're straying away to the dark side- flying IFR with bells and whistles kicking skydivers out the door can't be your idea of having fun, can it?

Hello Fournieteers,
Now that the Olympic Games are over and you're allowed to fly over London again- just got word from Roland who will try to start his ferry from the UK next week, weather permitting. And if the TXP-fitting at Bicester goes according to plan. I'll try to keep you posted.

Hello Jörgen and all!

I am alive, at least barely as my summer holiday is over and I need to work almost daily. Dull. Hope Roland will get the job done!

My Fournication status is kinda low. Sadly. Too little time. I have managed to fly both RF4 and RF5 during this summer, so not totally bad. But one should be able to fly them daily! I posted a link in the photo thread as we had a nice formation with a couple of Cessnas. After that I flew back home low and fast over the most beautiful archipelago in evening light. I kind of remembered the beauty of flying again. In a real thing. I have to admit the Caravan with its 675 hp PT-6, G1000 avionics and GFC-700 autopilot give me some kicks too. At least descending from FL140 to land in about 3,5 minutes. But of course it's only a substitute. Inexpensive way to gain some hours in this world of incredible high gas prices.

I've been waiting to get my engine overhauled. Got a place to do it. Just have to wait a couple of weeks before the previous project gets ready. I've been waiting for more than three months. Hmm, it's about the summer in Finland. To me the previous project didn't look much more ready yesterday than it did in May... I have also been thinking more and more about a total overhaul to the bird. But would be nice to fly at least one summer before that. And there is the problem of lacking space. As I live in the capital area, there are not too many barns and old garages nearby. And if there is, my monthly salary is not enough for them With my previous car project I know the damn thing must be done somewhere in the neighborhood, otherwise it won't be ready ever. Never. Luckily I have the club plane possibilities, although I don't have too much time to fly them either. The work, the kid, the wife, the distance, the gas price, the skydivers...

This, sadly, is my Fournication status.

Antti,
sorry to hear that, hope you get better return on your Fournier soon. It's a good sign you returned here!

Just got off the phone with Roland, he landed in Bremen yesterday and will hopefully land at my strip this afternoon. Wx is at his heels with a lot of low pressures and rain so lets hope he'll make it. Boy- do I recognize that situation, I'll keep you updated.

Good to hear! Holding my thumb up the the blue sky (that for some reason seems to be over Helsinki at the moment)! I am actually quite anxious to have some progress in the Fournicating thing somehow. I saw Markku's paint job with his bird the other day. Perhaps it cheered me up as I was the last guy to land that one. Broke the wing and now quite nice looking fuselage that time... It's so good to see the Fournier I still have most hours in is getting nearer to its next flight.

Good to hear, Antti!
I have been wondering about Markku's progress but I guess he prefers to work on the RF 4 instead of wrestling with pictures on the computer. Please Markku, let us see the paint job as soon as you have time to take pictures!

Update from Roland, his ferry flight sounds a bit on the adventorous side, just like a Fournier flight is supposed to be. He texted me from Neumünster in northern Germany this morning were he refuelled. After that he was dodging rainshowers and had to land in Kongsted, Denmark with low battery which is why he didn't dare risk loosing communication while passing the heavily controlled aerospace around CPH (Copenhagen) which is just before he crosses the border to Sweden. Good call, if you ask me. We'll see if he continues this evening or if he flies on tomorrow.

I also had trouble with low batterypower as I did my ferryflight from the UK. As you fly with an unknown bird it's not easy to know the power consumption of the gizmo's you're using and I also think Roland (quite wisely) installed a transponder for the trip. I think it might be prudent if you remember to put fresh batteries in before a ferry flight (or any longer flight), you never know how many charging cycles the existing ones have been through. Also, don't repeat my mistake during my ferry- I charged the battery with starting cables connected to a revved up VW Golf. I actually did get enough charge to make it home (with com), but that was that battery's last charging cycle, that's for sure.....

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen

Hi Jörgen
That's the case, I will update the project progress within next few weeks, I try to complete the paint work with the smaller airframe parts when it's still relatively warm. Step by step the OH-380 is closer to be ready to fly

Glad to hear that, Markku! Keep up the good work and of course you're wise to paint while the going is good

I did get a remarkably coherent evening report from Roland, evidently it was "suggested" to him from Copenhagen approach that he landed and charged his battery (he flies with only one battery). So he is litterarely shot down at Kongsted airstrip, which turns out to be home of East-Sjaelland gliding club (they have a Vivat, Dave!) were the Sjaellands-championship in gliding just happens to be in full swing. Since there was no task today the strip was full of eager hands to help re-arrange all the gliders in the hangar to bring Rolands RF 4 indoors, and that was a good thing. I just came back after an evening Kayak-trip (I'm about 30 min flight from were Roland is) which was a tad moist- it was absolutely pouring!!!

Rolands battery is beeing charged by a high-tech, intelligent charger right now, and poor Roland will just have to endure the gliding comps evening dinner with subsequent rejoicing. Depending on wx (and perhaps other things) tomorrow he will stop by my place or make a dash for his remaining hour and a half to get home.

Hello Fournieteers,
Roland sent a textmessage as he took off in his 4 from Kongsted this morning at 11 am local with the intent to visit me in Staffanstorp, but unfortunately a huge CuNim rendez-vouz:ed at the same time over the airstrip. It was one of those weird rains, one mile from the strip it was nothing, but then... I had fullspeed on the wipers as I drove to the strip, not anticipating to see anything flying.

But as I came to the strip at 11.40 am I saw Roland make a circle around the strip in the pouring rain at 500 ft before he decided to get the hell out of Dodge. I just managed to snap this shot from a distance as Roland headed for the West (you can just make out a red 4 in the middle of the picture). Wise decision, it would have been quite dangerous to try to land in low visibility on a narrow strip (ca 15 m) like Bjällerup and the locali shower kept pouring for a couple of hours, still with a sharp demarcation towards the west.

I just got off the phone with Roland who landed at his home base "Herrljunga" half an hour ago. He had CAVOK along the Swedish westcoast and got home with no issues. He said he'll try to do a write up of his story which apart from his dealings with Copenhagen approach involved a spinner coming loose + unfavourable weather etc. Well done and congratulations, Roland!

May the 4's be with you/ Jörgen

Congratulations to Roland for getting safely to his home base! Sounds like an epic! The weather in UK is not good again today so I think he made it just in tme. It's very hit and miss to make a long flight in these conditions.

Congratulations! Well done. The weather is kind of strange. We were supposed to have a very bad weekend for which I didn't take a paraflying shift I was offered. And what did we have? Two most beautiful and warm days which were among the best of whole summer. It was nice to pick some blueberries and have a long walk by the shore with family. Not to mention the cold beer and grillings. And I even saw two Fourniers! But a bit strange anyhow. And on Monday morning the sky is so grey and wet it'll soon fall off.

Well done Roland!

I also know from personal experience that trip can be a bit of an adventure.

This summer's weather has been very disappointing, and difficult to predict.

In ten days Matt & I are heading south to Roanne in south-central France.
I think we shall have to leave plenty of time to get there safely.

We were not able to get to the Texel show because of the weather.

Shoreham this weekend. Just 15nm away, but will the weather be OK?

Yours, Bob
