Several years ago, I was told by somebody who reckoned he knew about these things, that you can't loop an RF4D from level flight. He also said you can't fly two consecutive slow rolls because "it's only a little motor-glider, after all." Well, I beg to differ...

https://youtu.be/ahCLLiUL6Zs

Before you all howl "Big engine, big engine", you should know that HDO still has its original, 48 year-old, October 1968 Rectimo No198, which has now completed more than 1,400 of its permitted 1,500 flying hours without overhaul. Twelve years ago I did replace its original 1,198cc cylinders and pistons with second-hand 1,385cc ones, but these have now flown 400 hours, and are probably a bit low on compression. The heads and bottom end are all completely original though, as is the carburettor. The magneto got a new coil at 950 hours. I would guess that it currently delivers about the forty horsepower of the original when new.

The trick of course has nothing to do with engine power, and everything to do with practice.

So, take a look at this clip and decide for yourself whether level loops and sequential slow (axial) rolls are in fact feasible.

Incidentally, I measure that roll-rate at a dizzying 54.4 degrees per second. Don't laugh, that's very good for a Fournier!

Happy Fournibatting everybody, and may you all have a great 2017

Nah! You can't kid us, Bob. It's the 4 microjet motors bolted to your wingtips that's letting you do that.
