Instead of Santa Ynez, our Saturday fly-out lunch will be to Agua Dulce Airport, 50 miles to the northeast of Santa Paula. This is the same place we flew to for the past two years and the owners of this neat little country airport have asked us to return. Owned by NASCAR team owners Wayne and Connie Spears, the airport was founded in 1958 and has struggled to stay afloat until these great folks came onboard. The existing hangars are done in the style of a large red barn and the approval was just received to add 70 additional hangars of this type. As those who have been here before can attest, it is a fun place to hangout.
As a bonus, ground bound attendees will have the opportunity to be driven to Agua Dulce in a stretched Hummer limousine at no cost whatsoever. It will leave Santa Paula at 11 AM sharp for the hour drive through the orange groves of the beautiful Santa Clara river valley east to I-5 then through the booming Santa Clarita valley to the hilly high desert community of Agua Dulce with it’s world famous Vasquez Rocks. Named for a famous early California bandit who hid out here, it is the scene for the filming of about a zillion movies. This should be a fun trip.
The early bird dinner on Thursday, June 19, will be at a popular local restaurant while Friday night will be our traditional Wienie Roast. As a change of pace, the Saturday night BBQ will be an authentic California-Mexican meal with hand made tortillas and all the fixings. Yours truly is looking forward to this one.
The actual fly-in dates are June 20 and 21, 2008 with the go home day on June 22.
