I found that my stabilizer "L" bracket on one side has a little play so I've grounded it until I can get it fixed.
It may be that the screws just need to be tightened but I wonder if anyone suggests a doubler or backing plate in that area to distribute the load around the holes and allow tightening up the screws more without damaging the original wood?
I'll know more once I remove the stabilizer and see what is going on there that it would loosen up.....perhaps its just wood shrinkage?
Any suggestions?

Hi Ray,
I can't remember of the top of my head if the 4 is the the same but certainly similar to the RF 5 b regarding tailplane attachment. This is a picture from inside the tailbox on RF 5b "SE-UDI", the camera is held inside through the inspection hatch on the right side. The fitting is the pushrod for the elevator and the nuts are on the attachments bolts for the tailplane at the upper side of the tailbox.

So the nuts already have a plate under them....good!
Is access to these nuts from an access hatch on the RF4D's fuselage side under the stabilizer (I don't remember seeing one so maybe just on the 5) or can you also get at them by removing the stabilizer ?

You reach them from the hole on the fuselage side where the rudder cable sort out.

Check also the fixing plates on stabilizer, in our planes (#4098 and #4144) they have been the problem. There are 3 M5 bolts for each pair, and if they are loose, you have to make an opening to stabilizer plywood skin to tighten those nuts.

I was able to locate and tighten the "L" bracket bolts this weekend, thanks to everyones guidance.
I think the wood has shrunk a bit since arriving in California 9 months ago.
Interestingly my backing plate for the L bracket was larger and also incorporated a nylon guide block for the rudder cable to ride in.
The opening was only just barely wide enough to allow my arm to fit inside and going strictly by feel I was able to get a socket on the nuts on the inside and tighten from the outside simultaneously.
