I was finally was able to assemble the engine after months of waiting on the new cylinder heads. Assembly was actually quite easy following the instructions in the Great Plains manual.
I milled .6" off the oil cooler adapter to lower the cooler. Some fins on the cooler needed to be milled as well (just fins, not oil cavity).
Here you can see the finished motor mounts on the Diehl case. It still amazes me that all this fits in the space behind the engine without changing the location of the engine a bit. I have some new valve covers that will go on after everything is working and I won't be beating them up on and off.
Lots still to do; baffles and stuff after it's mounted, and fitting the new cowl.

As a follow-on to Bob's issue with internal friction on his new engine...
I noticed that there is a lot of internal friction in this engine. I do know that it rotates very freely with everything installed except the piston rings, so I know all the friction is being caused by the rings. It will be interesting to see how much and when the friction lessens during break-in.
It also begs the question about proper break-in proceedure and proper break-in oil. The Great Plains manual says use regular automotive oil and that the total break-in could take 25 hours. I did some searching of the forum and didn't return a lot on break-in.
Any other words, comments, or experiences in breaking in a new engine?

Mira Slovak recently shared this advice with me. It came from Jon K, who rebuilt both Mira's engine and mine. I trust it is OK to post this advice here.
Here are the instructions for "break In' of the 1385 Rectimo VW.
#1 Procure 3 Qts. 30wt. Break in oil, Either Brad Penn,(prefered) or valvoline high zink 30wt racing oil.
#2 Set Magneto timing at 28degrees total advance.
#3 Re torque prop to crank hub nut to 80 ft lbs. Prop balance is extremely important as you know! Assuming everything is mounted properly. Start engine....Run and check for any irregularities. IE fuel / oil / vacuum leaks. check timing & carb adjustment. Run in time should be 1 hour or more, Shuting off and re-starting bringing up to tempreture each time Aprox 15 min intervals.
#4 Let cool. Remove valve covers, Remove rocker arms, Re-torque cylinder heads to 24 ft lbs working from the center outward (a vw handbook will help with sequence.) Re-install rocker arms and torque to 16 ft lbs. Re-adjust valves to .004 th...Again a handbook will help in this area. Start and recheck all systems..
#5 Drain oil and replace with 30wt valvoline racing. Time to fly...After a 1 hour flight let cool and re- adjust valves..Again check all systems...

We did the break In procedure from Great Plains manual, on 4 Sonerai engines (Including mine) and we got a very good result. This procedure is about the same done by Mira Slovak.
