In organizing the US West Coast Motorglider Flyin 2010 (Not the Fournier one in 2011)
I have learned about a guy named Paul Ralph from Victoria BC, Canada area, who wanted to
get an RF5 but due to lack of availability built his own RF5 like aircraft.
I think he is an Aeronautical Engineer type.
He has been flying it for a season now.
Check out this interesting bird he calls a Santa Anna:

"I started my motor glider project some ten years ago because i couldnt find a Fournier rf5. I had some experience designing and software writing for other people so thought i would do my own. Figured it might take a couple of years but ??????
Flew it last year and have been testing and tuning it. Very pleased with the flying characteristics but have had a few problems with the electric u/c retraction. ( micro switches!!). I have two sets of wings. The short ones are for long distance touring and are equiped with large flaps. The longer ones are for soaring and i havnt finished those yet.
I have an old website giving details. Ralph Paul"
