Hello,

I have a Mitchell machanical tach in N2182 and I had a VDO marine tach in N2188. I had to notch the wood support behind the panel to clear. Dann Parks (owner of N2188) can send a picture of the notch.

Hi All,

Thanks for all re suggestions, I was able to locate a used, but serviceable tacho from a Motorfalke, the vintage will fit nicely.

Now I need to find a matching tacho cable I guess...

Aha!

Neat solution, but what will happen when you fly aerobatics and the rpm go to 4,000?

Tee hee!

I guess the needle will just bounce against the stop, but maybe you need to remove the glass and paint in five (or so) more lines.

Can't wait to see your aeroplane flying, so we have three airworthy RF4s in Australia.

Yours, Bob

Hmmmm,

Didn’t even think about it, but I was kinda wondering why all Motorfalke tachos only go to 3,500. Well, I guess you don’t really aerobat a Motorfalke like you would a RF4D.

I suppose you do not use the tacho for RPM management during aeros, right? In that case, all I need to do is talk find out what happens when you over-rev the thing.

Collin, I see from your pics that your tachos only go to 3,500 as well. Any issues with that?

Will keep you posted, Bob, you back in Oz?

BR

Tim

Hi,

The prop that I fly with is Culver 53"x33". It may be little big for the 1385cc engine. Climb RPM is 3,000 and 3,000 also gets just over 100mph (160 kph, 90 knots) Top speed 127 mph (205 kph, 110 knots) @ 3,400 rpm. If I don't pull the power back on the back side of a loop I will see 3,500-3,600 rpm. I don't fly much over 3,000 rpm for the noise.

Hi Tim,

Yes, we're back in Australia, and I'm busy practicing for the Red Bull finals this weekend.

Like Collin, I now have a coarser propeller, so I only get close to 4,000 rpm these days when I dive to a great speed for the vertical manoeuvres.

What happens at 4,000 rpm with a 1200/1400 VW motor? It just goes around quicker. No other problem. Were it a Lycoming or Continental with big heavy internal components, I would worry about exceeding max rpm, but after five years of doing it several times on every occasion I fly, in a forty-year-old, 1,300-hour motor, I can say with certainty that there are 'no worries'.

Of course, the Falke had a different VW conversion. The only one I flew had an Ardem, with chain-driven Lucas magnetos, and Ardems are limited to 3300rpm max, precisely because of the flail on that chain.

If you want one of those coarser props, the last one cost me $750, and it comes from Mike Ellinas at Kerrisdale, or something like that in Victoria. The current one is optimised for the 1400cc motor.

Yours, Bob
