What are you using for an airfilter for your Limbach 1700 w/ the 150CD Stromberg? Source & model # for your filter element?

(My Stromberg has a round filter housing approx. 5" in diameter & 1" high. The previous owner just put a piece of foam around it that comes from industrial engines & is used as a foam prefilter for dusty conditions. I've searched, but haven't found a proper filter element in the right dimensions.)

Hello,

Here is a picture of K & N air filter RA-0450. It will need the have a adapter made to move back and up to clear the engine mount. The size is 5 1/2" x 2" (14cm x 5cm)

As suggested in the engine section, best is to remove the foam and put on some coarse steel wool like tat used to clean saucepans. It is not affected by fuel and can be easily cleaned without removing the filter by blowing some fuel with the spray gun and after some air.

James,

Check out the K&N 56-9121 Kit. It is for a 1971 spitfire and has with a crome top and base to fit carb. Or you may remove the top, and bottom of the old filter and then sandwich in a E-3211 K&N element

Hi James,

The spit filter looks good. I will order some on Monday.

I will be interested to see how it goes. However, my 1700E has (what seems to be) a "custom" carb heat box between the top of the carb and the airfilter. That leaves only about .5" of room between my 1" high air filter and the firewall. So, I don't think the K&N will work in my airplane as the filter is 1.75" tall. I will likely need to go with Eugenio's suggestion for steel wool. I just need to make an inner screen to keep the steel wool from being sucked into the engine.

James,

I have the same restricted carb location problem with Dual carbs on my Limbach L2000 in the Grob 109.

I have been using the "Steel wool" solution, that although better than nothing could still benefit from one of those foam "Socks" over top.

The steel wool only prevents stones, bugs etc and is not great if there is any dust in the air.

I have been thinking of an offset extenstion and a K&N filter but I have a certified aircraft and it will be more of a pain in the rear to do something like this due to the extra rules.

In your case it is a cheap way of adding sevice life to your engine even though the extension might be a bit of trouble, but K&N filters come in all shapes and sizes and are good protection with high airflow rate.

My 2 cents.

Ray
