Where to put the wing seams? printer friendly version

I'm just about to start new fabric on the wing. I had planned to put the fabric seams on the leading edge and the trailing edge, but there is another option of using a single piece on the leading edge and seaming over the spar on top and bottom. I don't think a single piece will go from spar to spar over the trailing edge at the widest point, so it would probably be three pieces, seamed at the trailing edge as well.

Could a slight seam bump on the leading edge affect the airfoil? Seaming at the spar might be cleaner, but more seams. For those who have covered the wing in fabric, where did you put the seams? Any other advice from the group on wing covering?

After much thought, measurements, and examining the original wing covering, I have decided to put the seam on the top and bottom of the spar (like the original).

The fabric is 72" wide. One 20' long piece can be cut in half and used on both front D-sections. Another 20' piece can be used on the top wing from the spar back, and the trim can be used on the other side. Same for the bottom. So the wing can be covered with 60' of fabric and no seam on the front.

Seaming on the front would have fewer seams, but would require 4-20' pieces of fabric since the trim pieces couldn't be used.

Anyway (I think) that's the plan. Starting to strip the wing now.
