Hi All,

In the “metric hardware thread in the maintenance forum we wandered off topic a bit and mentioned CHT gauges. I thought I start a proper thread for those (like me) who are going to install one.

Whilst the supply of suitable gauges is plentiful, I thought I ask some basic questions (again):

What is the correct diameter of the K-type thermo-couple washer to be installed under the spark plug, 14 mm or 16 mm?

Which cylinder should I fit the thermo-couple to? Am I right assuming that #4 (the rear right one) is the hottest of the four?

Is there enough space in the spark plug recess for the thermo-couple without having to machine any of the cylinder head material in the area?

How important is it to install a CHT gauge which is compensated for changes in ambient temperature? I noticed that there is quite a price difference for those…

What other issues have you guys come across?

As always, your feedback is highly appreciated.

BR

Tim

P.S.: The picture of my panel is photo-shopped, I haven’t installed the CHT gauge or slip indicator yet. My RF4D does not have any electrics anymore, hence the available space on eh left hand side of the panel

Hello,

This CHT/EGT gauge is from Aircraft Spruce. I have the 14mm thermo coupling under the #4 spark plug and the EGT is also in the #4 exhaust pipe.

Collin,
I´m sorry but you have to stop posting pictures of your RF 4- particularly the engine. It´s simply not fair to show such a clean engine and it makes all the rest of us suffer from severe spells of bad conscience. Don´t you have ANY dirt in Oregon?

Take 5(b) just 4 fun/ Jörgen
