The July 2008 edition of the excellent British "Pilot" magazine has another great article on the Jungmann. Nick Bloom flew Pete Kynsey and Anna Walker's beautiful Tigre powered CASA 1131 and wrote a seven page piece for the magazine.

buyersguide.jpgThe article goes into a lot of detail about what to look for when purchasing a Jungmann and, of course, what it is like to fly. It also has a side bar by my Fournier flying friend Bob Grimstead.

The only negative part of the review is that Nick made comments about how the progressively larger and heavier Tigre engines moved the CG more and more forward to the point that the Jungmann cannot be landed in three-point attitude and runs out of elevator during aerobatics.

The exact same comment was made when the very same Jungman was reviewd back in March 1992 (see here). I thought then, as I do today that this is a mistake. I have only flown a couple of Tigre powered Jungmann, but they were nicely balanced and could easily be landed three-point. While it is true that the Tigre is rather heavy, it is counteracted by increasingly large peices of lead in the tail of the Spanish aircraft.

As is always the case, a person should ensure that the CG of the empty aircraft is in the correct location from time to time, and then ensure that it is properly loaded before flight. It is the CG position in flying trim that is the most importand thing! Of course Nick, Anna and Peter all look a good deal lighter than me. Perhaps that has something to do with it too :)

You should still be able to find a copy of the magazine at your local newstand, or you can order a back-issue on line at their website: Pilot Magazine. If you can't find a copy, send me an email and I'll try to find you one.
