I was told the bearings sit on a shoulder with a spacer inside. You have to drive them out from the opposite side
With gentle persuasion with a hammer, the bearings came out. Unfortunately, they came out in lots of little pieces. My bearings must have been in there since the 1960's and the outside housing wanted to stay where they had been for all those years. But, eventually I got them out.
There is a spacer between the bearings. and you can see the shoulder where the bearing sits.
Gonzalo sent me a drawing of the spacer. He also told me that a perfect replacement bearing was the FAFNIR 38 PP2 bearing easily obtained on the internet.
I had to buy from two different sources, but the bearings arrived as advertised. They have an OD of 22 mm, the bore is 8 mm and the width is 7 mm.
I crudely used an exact fitting socket which touched the outer race of the bearing and tapped on the socket until the bearing slid into place. John Hickman offered use of his special bearing insertion tool, but my impatience had the bearing installed before I found out about it.
No longer will I be able to blame my egg shaped loops on stick bearing resistance. Hope this helps. Thanks again to Charlie, Gonzalo and John !!
